I recently used Macrium to save an image of my old hard drive and restore on a much larger new hard drive. The restore went well and I didn't have any problems for a week or so. I later got the message "Hall.dll is missing or corrupt, please replace hall.dll" I did replace hall.dll with no resolve. After using msconfig and the "check all boot paths" button I received the warning:

It apears that the following line in the BOOT.INI file does not refer to a valid operating system: "signature(fd478bc7)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect"

I hit the delete button but it didn't delete the line from the Boot.ini, I figured I'll still need to address the operating system in the boot.ini but if the default is invalid I'm at a loss as what to write in... My operating system is indeed a valid copy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How did you use msconfig if the system would not boot and replacing the hal file did not resolve? – Moab Oct 26 '10 at 2:08
You might consider posting the make and model number of the new hard drive. – Moab Oct 26 '10 at 2:09
