I am having problems returning from standby even after a hard shutdown. Basically machine hangs with no power light, screen display etc. only fan noise.

I am wondering if Vista somehow still thinks it returning from standby even though I have rebooted, maybe due to an invalid registry entry or something similar. I've Googled this all day with no luck. Shutdown/reboot and hibernate both work fine and the machine passes built-in diagnostics. Thanks!
