I'm looking for an app to help me find places to stop during road trips. Ideally, it would work so that when I've got the directions from e.g. Google Maps, I could have the app "find interesting places along the route."

Any suggestions?

What gadgets are you bringing along? – Randell Aug 11 '09 at 6:47
I'm lugging around a mobile phone with an active network connection (a Nokia, not an iphone), and an old GPS navigator. Sort of thinking my next phone will do both navigation and phone stuff, so if there is some iphone app for this purpose, I might consider getting one of those. – Manne Aug 14 '09 at 10:26

You could try ViaMichelin. Has great flexibility in giving good sceneinc / fast routes. Also has some sightseeing options.

Google Earth has the option to show you sights to see

Yahoo! Travel can help you plan a trip and have it find sights to see

Via Michelin does something the same and also gives you information on pay roads and the like

Take a quick look at this article from makeuseof.com

I'd suggest looking at MapQuest.

Excerpt:

How about the best restaurants or what’s going on in the city? Each major urban centre will have a star beside its name. Click on that star and MapQuest will give you all the current news on what’s happening in that city.

You could try Microsoft Streets & Trips.
They have a 60 day free trial. This should cover your holidays ;-)
