It would appear you have configured apt-get not to ask for configuration data. Try running sudo dpkg --configure jabberd14 to configure jabberd14.

Alternatively, you could try dpkg-reconfigure jabberd14 to do the configuration.

Try running dpkg-reconfigure debconf to see if you have set the interface to noninteractive which will turn of prompts for required configuration data when installing new packages.

It looks like the jabber.xml file is corrupt or empty. Try editing it. Check /usr/share/doc/jabberd14 for configuration information, and possibly a sample configuration. dpkg-reconfigure might correct the configuration file. –  BillThor Nov 15 '10 at 15:38

Update /etc/default/jabberd to have your hostname. Stop and start jabberd –  BillThor Nov 16 '10 at 20:19

Check the documentation at jabberd.org for the installation guide and configuration hints. You will need to edit jabber.xml for it to be useful. –  BillThor Nov 16 '10 at 20:44
