Have you tried running the update again? If there was an error during installation, it may have corrupted your system files. Running the update again should repair them. – Cody Gray Nov 21 '10 at 8:12

“It can't start up” is useless for troubleshooting. Describe what happens, and in particular report any error message precisely. – Gilles Nov 21 '10 at 16:13

Since there could be many reasons why that update failed, you should first boot up Ubuntu on CD. When it's booted, backup all of your important files to an external storage and then try to find out why Ubuntu doesn't work anymore.

If all fails, format and reinstall.

Do you have VIA integrated graphics? Mine worked on 10.04 Ubuntu but is broken in 10.10.

Do you have an "old" ati graphic card ? There is some regression on radeon driver. Can you start in recovery mode (command line only)
