Good software to take a blog and format it for printing

I'm looking for some web-based software to facilitate the printing of online content.

For example: A user may login and have a number of stories, pictures, and misc other information that they want to arrange and have printed by a professional printer. Think of it as being able to take information from a blog and being able to arrange that information and have it submitted to a printer (presumably in PDF form).

Here's my firm requirements:

  • A PDF must be generated at the end of the process
  • Everything must be web-based (or at least the portion that the client sees)

Here's what I hope can happen:

  • Users can change the layout for their printout. (Example: The user selects a picture for their printout and wants to move it to the top left of Page 2 instead of the bottom right of Page 1.
  • Lazy users should be able to select a default theme which would automatically be populated with their selected content. Kind of like a Crystal Report, but with additional images.

Does software exist for this purpose?

I was looking at InDesign, but I don't tihnk it has the web-based capability.

Dupe close because while the newer one is of extremely similar premise, it does not cover just web-based software, which is outside the scope of SU. – random Mar 29 '10 at 15:19

Firefox extension PDF Download, that uses an external site to convert to PDF.
This is the front end for commercial software PDF Nitro, which lets you do things more easily.

Another alternative is FireShot firefox extension, that can save images of entire pages.

The answer to this question involves utilizing technology such as InDesign Server or Quark Server.

http://dynamicpublishing.quark.com/qxpserver/

http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/indesign/articles/indcs2at%5Fdatamerge.html

This is typically referred to as Web to Print publishing technology.

Both Adobe and Quark typically sell these products through Value-Added Resellers since most customers need a customized interface developed to fit their situation.

Use LaTex.

How much additional work would it take to convert the artist's layouts to a LaTex format that can accept dynamic data? Feels like a lot of overhead and might constrain growth. – Brian Webster Aug 13 '09 at 19:07
