What is the best vim colorscheme for using in a black-on-white terminal emulator like xterm? All that I need is for it to be readable, the theme I am using currently, desert256, is horribly unreadable with a black-on-white terminal emulator.

"Best" is going to be tricky. There are lot of them, and it's worth trying out a bunch, and having some alternatives to switch to when you get bored. Personally, I've been using darkbone when running vim in a dark-background terminal emulator, and I like it a lot. (I know the page says it's for the GUI, but for me it works fine in a terminal emulator.)

I like Pastel for coding and molokai for latex/text
