I am looking for an alternative for Inkscape, which is great but I find a little too brittle, the development is too slow, and its integration with OSX is non existent (runs with X). It's ok if not open source/free, but I don't want to go Adobe. That's way too expensive (and complex, for my needs).

Here is a very thorough review and comparison of OSX drawing tools: http://jonwhipple.com/blog/2008/05/25/drawing-conclusions Also, for just a feature comparison matrix of what tools are out there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_vector_graphics_editors

You should check out VectorDesigner by TweakerSoft. USD$70. I've used it, and enjoyed it, but I am not a professional designer.

Perhaps Scribbles will do the same as Inkscape? I really enjoyed using it, but since I have no ability to draw beyond shapes and layer styles in Photoshop, it wasn't for me.

Intaglio is probably the closest thing on the Mac to "Adobe Illustrator"-style vector drawing. I've used it for some time with pretty good success, but the "Drawing Conclusions" review linked above by Arathorn has got me considering VectorDesigner or ZeusDraw.

"DrawIt is a vector editing application with support for bitmap-like image filters." Very well built app, features a ton of functionalities that make Illustrator look odd.

I've got Vector Designer, and if its limitations are not a problem for you, it seems very polished and stable. I am not a professional designer and only used it to do some ocasional stuff. The price tag is interesting, but I got it with a software bundle. I also have Intaglio and I really liked VD more. But remember, I am not a pro designer.
