I remember back in the day a Lanwerx near me used something called HDD Sheriff. But I can't seem to find that anywhere.

We are thinking of starting a LAN at the office and I am curious what the best way to go about doing this is, at the lowest cost. We considered SATA Selector Switches with "stealth" drives in them. We would just power down the machine and swap SATA HDD's come LAN time and those "stealth" drives would have all of the software necessary. But SATA Selector Switches aren't cheap or easy to come by.

Any ideas? Are there virtual bootable HDD's out there that you can just use via network boot? Is that the best route? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

To clarify, you are planning to start having LAN parties at work and want to do so without affecting the hard drives in the machines? – Slartibartfast Dec 7 '10 at 6:04
