Can you recommend a single book to purchase on TCP/IP networking and configuration in Windows (preferably a digital download as PDF)?

A general detailed technical reference with good examples, please.

Looking for in particular:

  • Configuration of TCP/IP stack on Windows XP, Vista and 7, e.g. stacks, command-line tools, registry entries
  • Explanation of the new concepts seen in Windows 7 Network and Sharing center
  • Domains, workgroups, network shares, SAMBA, mounting network drives

I'm looking for something all-in-one, bit like what Tanenbaum did for Computer Networks in general ( http://authors.phptr.com/tanenbaumcn4/ ) BUT from a Windows perspective.

Background I have run into several issues with configuring Windows and would like something to help. (By the way I am also a Mac and Ubuntu Linux user :) ). I'm looking for a good Windows book for the work I do on that platform. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest the Network+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide. At this link, you can read it. I'm not sure if this is 100% what your looking for, but when I was in college last year, this is the book we used. I think that it was very easy for me to understand what you wanting to know after reading this book.

-Hope this helps

+1 / accepted because I think this should cover Windows 7 on the desktop as well as server. – therobyouknow Dec 21 '10 at 10:41

You might want to look at Windows ServerĀ® 2008 TCP/IP Protocols and Services

You certainly want to get the most recent book on the subject as possible.. This one seems to be the latest that concentrates on newer Windows technology. It does not mention Windows 7 - and not sure about .pdf version.

Maybe this will help though.
