I have a small video that I want to censor some parts of.

The video is a screencast of my computer and I want to hide some sensitive information, like some text and names from the video without actually removing that part of the video.

How can I add a blur or a black box to a region of a video?

Are you in Windows or Mac or Linux? What type of video files? MOV, AVI, MKV...? Even better would be to know the codec - if you don't know, download gspot. – glenneroo Dec 18 '10 at 19:22
It's an avi. I got this information from VLC: Format : MS Video Codec ID : CRAM Codec ID/Info : Microsoft Video 1 – dillinger Dec 18 '10 at 19:25

You're probably okay with Windows Movie Maker, since it's free and you can just add a, let's say, black title bar over a sensitive part of the video.

For more sophisticated editing, you can check out Adobe Premiere Elements

AviSynth is an awesome freeware tool that can do what you want and tons more (assuming you ever need to do more), though the level of complexity is somewhat higher than say, Windows Movie Maker.

Another advantage is that (assuming you're going to be doing this a lot), you can very easily write scripts to do all the work for you. Here are some samples or in your case, you could probably get nearly what you want by just using a few lines from Example 5.

try Wax, or windows movie maker, or if you are into a learning curve, blender.
