I've been inspired by the identi.ca Mosaic and now want to try generating my own photo mosaics, using Metapixel.

Does anyone know of a good, free, source for images such as the identi.ca avatars? Ideally I'd simply download a zip file of them.

I don't know about downloading a bulk collection but an excellent source for free-to-use images is Google Images.

Just click Advanced Image Search and choose labeled for reuse under Usage Rights.

I'd suggest googling for "free stock photos" - there are a bunch of sites that have such :)

Might also consider a <shudder> CD of clip-art from Office Max :)

You can check the SD card of your own digital still camera.

If it does not fill quickly enough, here are some tips:

  • organize a party with the DSC available for everybody. You can also encourage your friends to take photos with their mobile phones, and share them afterwards.

  • find friends or relatives with a new born baby. They will be more than happy to show you their eigthth wonder of the world.

  • go outside. I see that you live in Bucharest. Many people would buy very expensive plane tickets to take photos of your beautiful town.

I'd rather take pictures in Toulouse :) – alex Sep 18 '09 at 9:13

Flickr has an API to query and download images. Some fair usage limitations apply.
