I have a DVD. I can play it but cannot explore/view files on it.

Why would that be.. can I investigate it?

Any errors? What exactly do you mean by "cannot"? – Mehrdad Jan 5 '11 at 0:01
There's been a miracle. Now the files show. Any idea why? – barlop Jan 5 '11 at 0:04

Usually this happens when you prep the drive to burn files on CD or DVD. A lot of people do this by mistake by dragging files over on to the drive. If you don't burn stuff via Windows interface I would suggest to disable the Recorder capability on your drive.

On XP : Open My Computer right click on the CD or DVD drive icon and select Properties. Click the Recording tab and then uncheck "Enable CD recording on this drive". This does not require restart.

I don't think i did that and I can see the files now so I guess that isn't the cause – barlop Jan 5 '11 at 0:26
I notice the IMAP CD burning service was on manual and stopped. I tried starting it, I can still view the files. So I think it was always stopped and that starting it wouldn't cause an issue – barlop Jan 5 '11 at 0:27
win xp.. btw, will what you suggest to try require a restart? – barlop Jan 5 '11 at 0:28
see the edit in this answer above – Mat Banik Jan 5 '11 at 2:34
I see it's enabled, the DVD is not blank. I just dragged an icon of a txt file onto it.. but I can still view the files that are on the DVD. It didn't cause the DVD to look blank. So I don't see how that option and action can cause the symptom I saw? – barlop Jan 5 '11 at 5:28
