Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have the requirement to monitor a certain webpage (https) open in my browser, keep on refreshing the page and play an alarm when a particular string appears on the webpage. Is there any way I can achieve this.

This question may be suited for stack overflow if you want to write something to do this yourself. Otherwise there are a number of free services online which monitor websites and can send you an email. As far as a desktop app which plays a sound I'm don't know of any in particular. –  Daisetsu Jan 6 '11 at 0:49

...and if there is such desktop software, it'll help to know which operating system you're running. There might also be an extension for Firefox or Chrome which could do this. –  Doug Harris Jan 6 '11 at 0:54

You may find this Google Chrome extension useful.

Doesn't this only allow checking for any change rather than a change matching a filter? –  Matthieu Cartier Jan 6 '11 at 1:36

@neurolysis It does appear to support a regex, which I presume will allow you to match some string. (caveat: I haven't tried it myself) See screenshot: chrome.google.com/extensions/img/… –  ghoppe Jan 6 '11 at 3:15

Ah, interesting! Didn't see that on a quick glance through the description. Upvoted. –  Matthieu Cartier Jan 6 '11 at 5:34
