I have a Dell laptop and Netgear router. Myself and my partner both use the same computer but have seperate logins. When my partner uses it, it finds the wireless network and connects no problem, but when I use it it does not. As far as I can see all the settings are indentical (should they be any different?) and I do not understand why it will not work.

Does your router do DHCP? Do you get an IP address? When you're logged in as yourself, does the laptop see the router? How many bars? Is the adapter enabled when you log in, or disabled? – goblinbox Mar 7 '11 at 4:45

You would need to supply more information for anybody to find a useful answer for you.

Specifically:

  1. Which OS are you running?
  2. How is the wireless network encrypted: Which standard doess it use (WEP, WPA, WPA2?), which encryption method does it use?
  3. How does the "not connecting" issue manifest itself? Does it reject the password? Is there an error message, and if so, what does it say?
  4. Which router are you using?
