I have an index card designed in Word. It's fairly complicated with graphics, borders and background.

The page layout has been set to landscape and with size set to 4x6.

How can I print this, 4x per A4 landscape sheet? I cannot for the life of me work it out.

The printer always seems to do a single card per A4 sheet, wasting 3/4 of the page.

"Pages 1,1,1,1" will result in 4 sheets being printed.

What am I doing wrong?

If your printer supports it, you could try to let it merge multiple sites on to one. – Bobby Jan 12 '11 at 9:56
As dma57361 suggested you need to set as labels. However, it still probably won't work unless you have a full bleed printer. – opsin Feb 1 '12 at 3:26
You could get 3 on there. Two vertical and one horizontal. – opsin Feb 1 '12 at 3:33

For Word to be able to print 4 pages to a sheet, it needs to have 4 pages. Unfortunately you can't simply print a single page 4 times on a sheet. The answer to copy and paste is correct. :-)

Also be aware that you have two sets of print settings and these often function independently.

First is the Word Print Settings. These give the most predictable results. Here you set the number of pages to be printed on a sheet.

Second is your Printer Properties. You can also set the number of pages per sheet in here. Leave this as 1 or you are also likely to get a border around the whole lot if your single pages have a border.

Now, the Printer Properties paper size defaults to you document page size. Change it to A4, or whatever actual paper size you are using and select OK. Note that this will only apply until you load the Printer Settings again, then it will default again. (at least on my version of Word!)

Finally select Print from Word!

Copy your work and paste it three times into same Word document and then print

How do you do that with page borders and background art? – Anna Jan 12 '11 at 10:08
just press ctrl-a , ctrl-c and then press ctrl-v three times – Shekhar Jan 12 '11 at 10:10
This seems like a waste of paper and ink. – Ramhound Apr 3 '12 at 14:55

Tools -> Letters and Mailings -> Letters and Envelopes

From within the Labels tab click the Options button.

From here you need to configure the page to use "labels" the size of which you need. You can create new custom sized labels, which is what you probably need to do - if you do, make sure you set the page size to A4 landscape.

Then you simply place your work in each of the four labels on the page.

Best way I found of doing it was a bit of a fudge but it worked. I set my word doc to page size A6 and paper orientation to landscape. When I came to printing it would not print 4 to a page so I ended up printing 2 sheets to a page then taking the printed page and putting it back into the printer and printing the next two pages. It took a few attempts to work out which way I had to put the paper back in for the second pass but then it worked just fine. And it doesn't take that much longer. If I need 12xA6 cards in landscape. I set the printer to print 2 sheets per page and set the page range to 1-6. They get printed onto 3x A4 sheets which I then put back in the tray and print page range 7-12.

Just go to print, and below printer and presets go to copies and pages and change it to layout..then you can choose how many per page.

" change it to layout.." what do you mean by this? It doesn't really make sense. – Máté Juhász Jan 29 at 9:54
