I'm looking for a text editor that supports Markdown and has a spell check function. I would prefer a Windows program, although I can deal with a Linux solution. I don't own a Mac.

EDIT: Do any of these editors support live preview?

@akira: Mostly all I want is spell check -- but the spell check would need to be smart enough to ignore things like links and markdown formatting. Syntax hilighting features like those available in Markdown Mode for Visual Studio would be nice, but aren't necessarily required. – Billy ONeal Mar 15 '11 at 14:53

I too was a little apprehensive initially about this, but realized that its creating using WPF and thats how the 'updates' were designed to work. The author had said there would be a MSI package in future. – Nanda Jan 22 at 9:00

Also, you might want to try Sublime Editor. I read that it support Markdown.

Does Sublime support live preview? I poked around in the preferences and the help files and didn't find any indications that it could. – Adam Wuerl Jun 29 '11 at 11:33

TextMate can do this. Mac OS X only.

e ("TextMate for Windows") can as well.

The TextMate instructions for activating live preview of Markdown files also apply to e.

e text editor can show you a live preview of your markdown as well as syntax highlighting. – Lance Fisher Feb 16 '11 at 7:14

http://writemonkey.com/ supports Markdown and Spell check. It runs on Windows as well as a portable app. I really like it. My one gripe about it is it does not support syntax highlighting for Markdown.

Syntax highlighting is now supported in v2.2 beta, at least for some elements such as headings. – Karl Fast Aug 30 '11 at 11:59

There seem to be a lot for Macs, but I have not seen any for Windows. There are also plenty of JavaScript markdown preview libraries, I am using one typing this funnily enough.

Emdee (Mac OSX) has just been out in the last few days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foE-dXgTHoU

There is also http://keshiki.net/markdown-editor/ another Mac only program.

This might work on Windows with a bit of effort: http://codeboje.de/wysiwyg-markdown-editor/

Gonzo runs on Windows and is Open Source. Don't know if it has spell checking, but you could add that if you like!

I use gVim. Does a pretty good job with Markdown, has a reasonable spell checker and is an excellent text editor. It is very difficult to learn to use.
