I am looking for some advice about with WiFi Access Point suits me best:

  • 802.11n final
  • Gigabit Ethernet LAN port
  • Wall-mountable
  • (Preferably) Dual-band (2.4 + 5 GHz)
  • (Preferably) PoE-powered
  • (Preferably) VLAN support
  • costs less than USD 200 or something - I don't need anything of enterprise class and cost

I know the question migth seems similar to this one but I don't need a built-in switch, just a plain AP. The reason is that I have my router & switch inside a metal box and I need a dedicated AP out of it.

A single GbE port on a 802.11n AP doesn't seem all that useful to me... – Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams Jan 22 '11 at 23:11
This? Model No. TL-WR1043N / TL-WR1043ND. Its the most popular router at the moment in my opinion. Check if it fits the needs. – Shiki Jan 22 '11 at 23:15
@Shiki: it's a router, not AP - but of course I can switch AP portion off. Also not dual-band. – Michael Pliskin Jan 22 '11 at 23:19
@Ignacio Vazquez-Abrams well 100Mbit ethernet might not bit enough for 802.11n in peak mode (especially dual-band) - that's why I'd like GbE port. – Michael Pliskin Jan 22 '11 at 23:21

Newer Airport Extremes meet most of your criteria, missing only POE and VLAN support.

A couple of concerns: no web interface, can it work in AP mode (no router/NAT/DHCP), does it support WDS? – Michael Pliskin Jan 23 '11 at 21:35
It comes with a utility to manage it, and yes it can work only as an access point. I have an SRX100 firewall/router and use my airport that way. – bahamat Jan 24 '11 at 5:06

These are two routers I think I'll pick between. One isn't out yet, so I'll probably wait till the reviews of that come out before picking between them.

Both seem to be excellent, however they are all routers, not pure APs - will they work in AP mode? – Michael Pliskin Jan 23 '11 at 21:37
