I'm looking for a text-based application for *nix (mostly used on Linux, would be nice if it could be compiled for OS X) that runs in the terminal and downloads binaries or news articles (mostly binaries) from usenet given an .nzb file. It can have an external configuration file or can accept parameters on the command line. It'd be nice if the port was changeable and if SSL was an option. Is there software to do this? (I know there's probably software to read usenet postings, but I'm more interested in downloading binaries). Thanks!

use hellanzb. it is extremely fast and easy to setup!

if your on *nix your fav package manager will most likely have it

Config file is in /etc/hellanzb.conf
config is quick and painless, works great with screen, that way it can run in the back ground and you can just forget about it.

Hellanzb also pars and untars =)

Have you tried the alternative they suggest on the site, SABnzbd? I just don't know if I want to use "abandoned" software. –  squircle Jan 25 '11 at 0:18
honestly, give hellanzb a try, it is amazing and fast. From what I have tried it works the best even if it may be abandoned –  madmaze Jan 25 '11 at 0:41

Thanks to madmaze's suggestion, I tried the software linked on the now-defunct HellaNZB page, installed SABnzbd, and it works like a charm. It's so easy to use, and provides a very nice web interface for easy administration (as this is installed on a headless server).
