I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome. I have a 15,4 " Display and I would like to make the Desktop more useful. I don't like to save files there. If I could block it, it would be good. Making root to the owner of my Desktop-Folder would solve this part.

One way I could imagine how to make it more useful, would be to get something like in this video (0:08) to my desktop. Do you know how I could do so?

As soon as Natty Narwhal gets released, I will install it. So if you know something that would work with 11.04 version but not with 10.04 it would also be OK.

If you don't like to save files on desktop, then don't save files there. It's not like they appear by themselves. – grawity Jan 26 '11 at 16:31

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

The video you linked is showing off something called Ubuntu Netbook Remix. You can download the Live CD and reinstall your computer to get that interface.

Or the much better answer is to install the software ontop of your current Ubuntu. Take a look at The Ubuntu Page for the various bits of software. Pick which ones you would like and install and set them up.

I could be wrong, since I haven't loaded it and used it (I use xfce4 primarily), but the interface looks to be the new Unity window manager (http://unity.ubuntu.com/). You might want to look at installing and trying that to see if it meets your needs.
