Does you home PC have a static IP? What you want is a lot easier if you do. – nagul Aug 17 '09 at 21:20

You need to create a VPN (Virtual Private Network). If you get the right router, this might not even be that difficult.

I would try Hamachi - very easy to install on Windows: here is the homepage

You can create a dropbox account and share the credentials if you wanted.

I know Dropbox is popular for this situation. Definitely the easiest but there are some drawbacks as opposed to a VPN. – Travis Aug 19 '09 at 18:44

VPN is probably the easiest way to do this. You probably also need to do something with dynamic dns updating unless you have a static IP address at home. You don't want to just open your shares directly to the internet as that would be a very large security risk. Lots of home routers have VPN and DynamicDNS updating capabilities. If it's just yourself generating traffic odds are nobody will notice, but many ISPs have rules about serving data from clients in on their network. That said you'd be far from alone doing it.

Hamachi will let you use a LAN over the internet, as you requested. Note, however, that this may not be the best solution for a simple file share. I'd just set up FTP on your computer if I were you and use that to manage files. Alternatively, you could setup SSH and use WinSCP to manage your files.

How come this was downvoted when it's almost an identical answer to the 2nd highest rated answer...? Especially considering this answer came first... – Mark Henderson Aug 17 '09 at 23:00

If you are just sharing files, Opera Unite might be the way to go. As I understand it, you run your special/beta version of the Opera web-browser, which includes a server, and you'll need a 'myOpera' ID. You can configure your computer running this server to share files, and then you just need to know that URL (something like http://mycomputer.myoperaid.operaunite.com/) and (optionally) password to access the files, from any browser over the net, provided your home computer is turned on with Opera Unites running.

OpenVPN would probably be a good solution if you router does not have native support for VPN, and if you use DDWRT, you can have the router be the OpenVPN server.

There are many guides on setting up OpenVPN for this purpose, as well as free clients for any OS (Mac/Win/Nix)

You could also use Windows Live Mesh to share a folder between multiple computers and it will automatically sync the content across each computer over the internet or locally over a lan. This would provide you with a solution that is exactly what you're looking for.

live mesh also has a gotomypc functionality that will let you connect to any pc that is running mesh if the pc is set to do that. – Chuck Aug 19 '09 at 21:23

I use Live Sync (sync.live.com) for this exact function. Works great, and pretty quick as well.

+1 for the hamachi suggestion, super-quick VPN "in the cloud"

Just remember when creating shares on a computer, you'll need to assign a password to the user account that has permissions to access the share, else-wise you won't be able to access the info (unless you edit the registry to permit those sorts of things).

I would recommend logmein it is free to setup and you can use anywhere as long as your home computer is on.

I also use www.mesh.com. but it is still in beta by MS.
