It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

Your important documents, photos and music will be on your backups. So check your backups before doing anything else.

If your backups are unreadable for some reason, it may be best to try to work out why so that you don't get in this situation again.

If your music is from a service like iTunes you can register a new PC with the same account (max 5 PCs for iTunes I think, but you can de-register old PCs) and re-download it all. I don't think this option is available from all other music sources.

As a last resort (probably), remove the disk from the dead computer and connect it to a different computer (obviously one with the same type of disk interface, or using something like an inexpensive IDE/SATA to USB adapter). Then make a backup of your documents, photos and music.

Once you have at least one readable backup of your important data you can fix the hardware problems and if necessary reinstall your operating system (I guess some version of Windows from your mention of "safe mode"?) and applications.

Once the hardware and Operating system are OK, restore your documents, photos and music from the backup if necessary.

My wife's laptop had tbe same symptom. It could be inffected by a nasty virus.

Firstly, I would recommend to copy out your important files from your computer. For that you can use the Ubuntu Live CD to boot into Ubuntu. Then plug in an external hard drive. Ubuntu is able to detect both the internal and external hard drives and you can start to copy out your files.

Once done, you can try to pop-in the windows installation cd and try to do a repair if possible. Else, you need to format and reinstall windows.

-1 for the implication that doing a Windows repair will remove viruses, and also jumping to the conclusion that it is a virus on this lack of information. – Matthieu Cartier Feb 1 '11 at 9:55
