I get a black screen on Windows 7 right after opening Google Sketchup or Minecraft. I presume there are other applications that cause this too - but I have not tried to open them.

The window initially stops responding for a few seconds, before I get a black screen and my Skype call ends abruptly. I have tried waiting for a few minutes but nothing happens. I have to power down my computer and then boot it up again. This is becoming an annoyance, and I don't know what's causing it.

Here are my specs, if it helps: enter image description here

My graphics card is an ATI RADEON XPRESS 1100.

If you need any more info or if I've missed anything please ask.

Thanks :-)

Hmmm... Do you run Sketchup with DirectX? Try reinstalling it. (Dumb idea, but you can try it, right? I bet you it won't help. ;) ) – muntoo Feb 2 '11 at 23:05
Minecraft uses OpenGL, so it's not a dumb question, @muntoo. I've got a PC at my office that won't run Minecraft at all due to OpenGL issues. I'm guessing this is the problem. – Randolph West Feb 3 '11 at 0:21
@Randolph Wow, it uses OpenGL? I assumed it used Flash... (I haven't played minecraft.) It's possible OpenGL is the problem, because I think Sketchup can run in OpenGL by default (IIRC). – muntoo Feb 3 '11 at 0:45
It's written in Java (I was an early adopter) and that OpenGL error I got answered the rest. Hence, not a dumb idea :-). – Randolph West Feb 3 '11 at 0:46
Hmm, thanks, I think that may be the problem. I don't think my graphics card supports OpenGL. Minecraft and Google Sketchup were working fine previously though - they've only recently been giving me the black screen of death when I open them, so I'm not too sure yet. – Aero Feb 3 '11 at 15:45
