I have a problem in my PC, I use Windows 7 Ultimate and today when I started my PC, I couldn't see my desktop. Instead there was a black screen, no task bar, no icons, just a black screen. If I go to a image and set it as wallpaper, the black screen gets replaced with that wallpaper. My software is working fine, I can browse the internet, play games, and install things.. I can do everything but view my desktop. I have to run programs from task manager, which is a real headache. I have tried running Explorer.EXE and also tried the automated "fix my computer" on Windows 7 Ultimate, but they did not work. I am ready to do anything except formatting my computer.

Does setting the wallpaper change it permanently or does it change back to black then next time you log in or restart? – ChrisF Feb 7 '11 at 10:50
Are you sure you're not just hiding desktop icons (Richt-click » View » Show Desktop Icons or something similar), and have set the task bar to audo-hide (press the Windows key on your keyboard)? – Daniel Beck Feb 7 '11 at 10:51
Did the problem start after a Windows update or the installation of an application? A quick google shows that this has been the case for others with similar symptoms. – goblinbox Feb 7 '11 at 10:59

It sounds like your copy of Windows has failed the Genuine Advantage check. – ChrisF Feb 7 '11 at 11:07

I believe the warnings about running non-genuine windows are done through explorer, but the actual WGA checks are not. All you've done is suppress the alert, not the detection. – Phoshi Feb 7 '11 at 16:58
well, this thing happened to me before too, but I restarted my pc, tapped on f8 continuously, then clicked on repair my computer, did thie things 3-4 times and everything was back to normal!, so obviously it cant be the genuine problem – SunnySJ Feb 7 '11 at 17:10
