We are upgrading our music and video media at church and are leaning to using a Mac, but some say Windows 7 Professional will do all we want cheaper.

What do you suggest?

Please state your requirements. "Church use in video and music" is too vague. – Daniel Beck Feb 7 '11 at 16:23
This is too vague as it stands. It is a os x vs windows generic comparison without any details beyond video/music. Do you share content with others? Maybe you want to be compatible with what others are using in your network? Scale of operations? What software and hardware does your tech crew know about currently? What software is used in other computers in the church? etc. – Troggy Feb 7 '11 at 16:32

Either of these systems when configured with the correct software will work fine. A windows machine will be cheaper at the outset and more people are familiar with Windows then OSX but when you add in the cost of anti-virus applications, the headaches that may or may be associated with running windows on a network and the cost of any additional software you might require it tends to balance out.

You might pay more for the mac depending on your needs, but you will have less need to buy software for basic applications as much of it is already included with the computer. OSX for the time being is also far more secure in a networked environment out of the box and you would have little need for anti-virus programs if basic common sense is used while surfing the internet.

It really comes down to your budget, how much do you want to spend and how closely are the users aligned to either Windows or Mac? I use a mac mini for a Media Server at home but my work computers are Windows 7 and my laptop is Linux, it is a matter of preference. Both systems will do the job just fine and are on equal footing in the long run.
