I would like to avoid the tedious process of evaluating flash-downloading Extensions. Do you have one you can recommend?

There are plenty of extensions for downloading streaming videos, but my recommendation (at least for YouTube) is YousableTubeFix. Not only does it provide a convenient in-page button—which blends into the YouTube interface nicely—for downloading videos at all resolutions available, but it also has options to remove various sections of the video page, prevent auto-playing, prevent auto-downloading/buffering, and set video size.

Not an extension, but this greasemonkey script that uses Keep Tube works well for many popular video sites and can be installed in Chrome.

In linux I just browse to /tmp/ Once the flash video has finished buffering it is there available to copy any where I want. This is not working for later versions of flash see this post http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/7373/google-chrome-cache

I can recommend FVD Suite for use in Chrome in Windows. It gives several options of download quality and can also convert to other formats. Freeware.
