The title explains it all. I am looking for a good DLNA server so that I can stream my media files in my Ubuntu from PS3. I found this on the net, and apparently there are heaps of options out there: http://www.rbgrn.net/content/21-how-to-choose-dlna-media-server-windows-mac-os-x-or-linux

Does any one has any suggestion which DLNA I should use ?

Thank you

I was unhappy with the state of DLNA servers on Linux and wrote my own. I've been using it steadily for over a year: code.google.com/p/pydlnadms. – Matt Joiner May 21 at 16:37

Best is always very subjective ;)

Ones I have used successfully with linux and that are easy to setup:

PS3MS

PS3 Media Server is a DLNA compliant Upnp Media Server for [streaming to] the PS3, written in Java, with the purpose of streaming or transcoding any kind of media files, with minimum configuration. It's backed up with the powerful Mplayer/FFmpeg packages.

Serviio

Serviio is a free DLNA media server. It allows you to stream your media files (music, video or images) to any DLNA-certified renderer device (e.g. a TV set, Bluray player, games console) on your home network.

Thank you for the tips, I wrote a blog on PS3 Streaming: howtogeek.com/howto/43027/… I hope this helps other people who are interested to stream files from their PS3. =) – zfranciscus Apr 11 '11 at 3:38
+1 for PS3MS. Did not like Serviio because PS3 does not recognize subtitles sent by Serviio (it does not transcode the video). – Machado Feb 28 at 12:25

There is on very promising dlna-server called rygel. I think rygel could be very good in long run (after few upgrades).

Other one which I have used in ubuntu based NAS-server is minidlna. Minidlna is very compact and easy to use and install, but it's not having any support for transcoding etc. It's quite stable, so that why I use it at the moment.

Third one with huge scripting possibilities is Mediatomb. Unfortunately in my experience it's not stable enough for unattended use.

Check out TVMOBiLi

TVMOBiLi is a free* UPnP/DLNA Media server for Mac, Windows, and Linux Operating Systems that enables your computer to communicate with a myriad of modern devices in your home using the power of DLNA and UPnP. Our Dynamic Media Engine allows TVMOBiLi to communicate with the vast majority of TVs, Blu-ray Players, Games Consoles, and Mobile Phones that are currently on the market.

Otherwise use iSedora (Ran using Wine)
