I'm looking for a high dollar media server NAS. Recently used the DNS-323 and I was unimpressed by it's reliability and it's server functions (Authentication, Media server, iTunes server, etc..)

My requirements are:

  1. Must support RAID 1 or 5

  2. DLNA with on the fly video transcoding

  3. GigEthernet

  4. Preferably a 4 or more drive capacity

  5. Maximum reliability

  6. Quiet

Cost isn't so much an object (under $1500 would be nice?). Just looking for the best one. I've looked into QNAP, Thecus, and Buffalo, but I don't have a lot of experience with 'home' devices. Let me know what you've encountered, and what you recommend.

Buying recommendations are considered off-topic so the question is likely to be closed. Perhaps you could modify the question to ask about the CPU performance required for effective transcoding etc. or something that would require a technically-oriented response? – Linker3000 Feb 8 '11 at 19:53

Check out Drobo FS or the Iomega devices. Both meet or match your requirements I believe.

Sorry, looking back, neither of these support transcoding. You need some decent CPU for that. I'd still recommend either unit, but they would service a server to meet your requirements. – SpacemanSpiff Feb 8 '11 at 18:40
