How can I stop Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1 from auto deleting my inbox when emails are cleared from my server? Further how can I get Mozzila Thunderbird 3.1 to actually itself remove the emails from my server in the first place? What happened is I had my older computer open and somehow my old outlook express account opened on it and a mass of email I had already dowloaded onto Thunderbird on my more recent computer where again dowloaded from the server into Outlook express. This alerted me that the emails were still on server account. Now when I opened my more recent computer and Thunderbird (thanks windows 7 for no email program)it immediatly and whithout request automatically deleted all the dowloaded emails that were no longer on the server (Outlook express dids its job and removed them) with no record even in the trash box. I checked that the email files were actually downloaded by Thunderbird rather than just the file headers and they were, so it seemsThunderbird just takes it upon itself to delete these email files from my laptop. It does it for both IMAP and POP3 settings. I've searched through settings and can find no option to stop these two things, ie 1 - emails auto deleting, 2 - not removing emails from server.

From a UCSF website: Step 6. Offline Settings

For those who are configuring Thunderbird for a laptop, or at home when you might not have continuous access to the Internet, you may want to configure Thunderbird to work in offline mode. Basically, this will cause Thunderbird to download the content of all of the messages in your Inbox to your computer. Normally, Thunderbird will only download the message headers until you actually read the message, then the body of the message (the content) will be displayed, but it will not be saved on your computer. This minimizes the duplication of the content and is normally a "good thing" -- unless you can't get access to the server -- then it becomes a definite "bad thing". Thunderbird's offline mode, however, in conjunction with features of the IMAP server rectifies this by allowing you to download all of your messages to your local computer, and by allowing you to synchronize things back up to the server when you are once again online. This means that operations like moving or copying messages to folders and deleting messages can be done when you are offline, and then will take effect on the server when next you connect.

Configuring for offline use is easy. Click on the account you just created in Thunderbird's left hand pane. This will bring up a list of actions/preferences for that account in the right hand pane. Select Offline settings under Advanced features near the bottom of the pane. You may need to scroll down to get to it.

To enable the offline features, simply click on the checkbox for Make the messages in my Inbox available when I am working offline. You can also select other folders to be available offline by clicking on the Select folders fo offline use..., but be aware that the more folders you select for offline use, the longer it will take to actually synchronize and go offline. After you are done, click OK to finish up.

To actually go into offline mode so that all of your operations are based on your local copy of messages, simply select File→Offline→Work Offline and then click Yes to download your messages. That's it!

This is more of a workaround than a solution. Even though I have selected the option to make messages available off line, my inbox still gets emptied too. My only other solution so far is to move all messages out of the inbox to other folders. I have a folder called sort where I move everything into for now.
