My macbook is completely frozen and will not shut down.

So i closed the lid to my macbook earlier and when i came back an hour or so later it had the kernel panic screen.

I go to hold down the power button but nothing happens!

I can't shut down the macbook with the power button and it is a 2010 macbook, so I can't easily take out the battery.

What should I do?

The battery will run out eventually. Go to the nearest Apple Store or service partner - you have a serious problem. – weltraumpirat Feb 20 '11 at 8:36

Unplug it. When the battery's done draining, plug it back in.

For how long are you holding down the power button? I had the exact same problem with mine about a month ago (MacBook Pro from Oct 2010). However, holding the power button down for 5+ seconds did the trick.

To force a shutdown, hold the POWER button down for 5 seconds. It will shut down

Maybe he didnt hold it long enough. Unless the power button itself is broken, holding it for 5+ seconds WILL power down the macbook. This is hardwired, it works no matter how messed up is his computer. – MestreLion Feb 20 '11 at 8:43
