I'm looking to get a new laptop - one of my choices has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card, the other a NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M. Could anyone explain the differences between these two types of graphics cards please?

why don't you go on the site and compare the specs? If you don't understand something ask about it specifically, as it stand this question is very broad. – Kyle Feb 24 '11 at 14:14
Hi Kyle. Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I know nothing about graphics cards and didn't realise my question was very broad! The difference between the two laptops - one has Intel Core i3 380M processor, 5650 graphics card, 4096MB memory and 500GB hard drive - the other has Intel Core i5 460M processor, the GT 420M graphics card, 4096MB memory and 640GB hard drive. Price difference is £120 and I'm wondering if it's worth the difference in price. I want the laptop to last me as long as possible (I only tend to buy a new one when my old one is ancient!). – Barb Feb 24 '11 at 14:39
@Barb - As it stands you question sounds like your more interested in information on what to buy and not the technical differences in general. Shopping recommendations are against the rules of SuperUser. (FAQ : superuser.com/faq) – techie007 Feb 24 '11 at 14:43

I'd initially read the question in a fashion of "How do I find out which graphics card is better?" which I would argue is reasonably on-topic. Graphics cards are always in a massive state of flux and it's difficult to compare two cards within the same range, let alone from different manufacturers.... – Mokubai Feb 24 '11 at 15:09

I was more concerned about how broad it was, but I guess this can be read as a shopping recommendation so I can see where techie007 is comming from. However I read it the same way as you @mokubai. – Kyle Feb 24 '11 at 15:34

Questions on Super User are expected to generally relate to computer software or computer hardware, within the scope defined in the faq.

The problem here is that comparing ATi and nVidia is not an easy thing to do as they have quite different architectures and programs (games) are written to exploit their powers differently.

Generally though you don't care about the architectural differences between them (which can be quite vast) and all you will likely want to know is which one is better.

For a quick answer to which is more powerful you can have a look at the technical specifications of each graphics card, but at best these will be very vague (and marketing orientated) ways of telling which is better. The following pages list all the important details of all nVidia and ATI graphics cards, with links out to information on what each part means.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units#GeForce_400M_(4xxM)_series

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ati_graphics_processing_units#Mobility_Radeon_HD_5xxx_Series

From those two pages the GT240M claims to have 192 GFLOPs of processing power available while the HD 5650 claims to have upward of 360 GFLOPs.

From that alone I would expect the 5650 to be better, which isn't too surprising as the 420M is a low-range card, the "20" is the placement within the nVidia 4xx series, and the 5650 is a mid-range card, the "650" being the denominator within the ATI 5xxx series.

You may be better off going to http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php and finding your prospective cards and comparing their scores.

GT240M : G3D score: 441, Rank: 230
HD5650M : G3D score: 620, Rank: 161

So it seems that the 5650 is a better card as its score is higher and its rank lower.

Hi Mokubai. Thanks for your helpful reply - very useful info. I've never had to decide on a laptop before and I'm finding all the tech specs really confusing! Some of the specs are just related to more of something but the graphics cards were totally different and just had me stumped. My brain is starting to get very confused - now I know what my current laptop feels like lol! – Barb Feb 24 '11 at 14:57

Notebookcheck Benchmarks list is a good place to compare – Sathya Feb 24 '11 at 15:28
