I'm looking for a basic, cheap computer that meets the following criteria:

  • Able to run off 12V
  • 1+ USB ports (more is better)
  • Very cheap
  • Runs Linux

This is for an embedded project that might potentially be mass-ish produced. The computer can be really slow and have minimal RAM. The SheevaPlug looks ideal but doesn't support 12V without hacking the case.

Sorry to quote FAQ on you, but under questions you have: and it is not about … videogames or consoles websites or web services like Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress electronic devices, media players, cell phones or smart phones, except insofar as they interface with your computer a shopping or buying recommendation – AndrejaKo Mar 2 '11 at 23:15
Fair enough. I'll change the question to fit the guidelines. Thanks. – David Pfeffer Mar 2 '11 at 23:24
What about something like an ATOM based PC? The boards are tiny and they are pretty cheap in comparison to full ATX machines. I know a handful of them run Linux with no problem they sell them with Ubuntu at a local computer show near me. – Solignis Mar 3 '11 at 0:52
If you need something smaller / more specialized you always got companies like Soekris Engineering and PCengines. I forget which one but one of them uses AMD Geode processors which I think are x86. – Solignis Mar 3 '11 at 0:54

Beagleboard would be a solution (it's 5V tough). You can even read some projects made using it to see if it fits your goals.

You could easily put together a mini itx solutiin for under a hundred if not fifty dollars(this would be more likely by buying older or used parts). Then install your own linux choice. If this is embeded, building your own could save you the prpblem of dealing with a prebuilt case.
