What is your preferred product instead of using Midnight Commander?

BTW: Norton Commander isn't used by me.

All the best, Leo

You can use FreeCommander (Windows) or muCommander (multi-platform).

FreeCommander is an easy-to-use alternative to the standard windows file manager, reminiscent of Norton Commander. Function to view (and sort after) foldersize, 37 languages, function to store ScreenShots as a file or to clipboard, . You can take FreeCommander anywhere - just copy the installation directory on a CD or USB-Stick - and you can even work with this program on a foreign computer.

muCommander is a cross-platform file manager that will run on any operating system which supports Java. It features a Norton Commander style interface to allow easy manipulation of files with many keyboard shortcuts. Pre-compiled builds are available for Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, Solaris, *BSD, etc.

Thanks, those are interesting. They do seem to require a GUI though. – Randolf Richardson Mar 6 '11 at 18:31

Midnight Commander is the Unix/Linux equivalent of Norton Commander which was designed for use in DOS. I'm not aware of any other Norton Commander clones for Unix/Linux.

I'm not sure which OS you're needing this for, so just in case you're looking for something similar to these tools for Windows there is this free/open-source one which is truly excellent:

  FAR Manager

There are native 32-bit and 64-bit editions to download (I hope that it will get ported to Unix/Linux some day). This is NOT a DOS application although it does use text mode.

Take a look at File Commander (http://silk.apana.org.au/fc.html) which is multi-platform. It as a lot of features and ready to use commands. It has the same look as Midnight Commander ;-)
