Can someone tell me if there is a way to download from newsgroups for free? I find my own ISP newsgroups are very limited and all the download-servers I see advertised on the internet are all paid ones...

AIOE provides pure NNTP access for free to anyone who wishes to use it:

You can use Google Groups for free.

But most Usenet News servers charge for access these days. I have a US$ 10/year subscription to some university's News server. They remind me every year to renew my subscription.
