I don't always wear my headset, but I want to keep it plugged in all the time. Sometimes I miss outlook reminders because I don't hear the sound playing through my headphones while I'm not wearing them. Is it possible to redirect Outlook 2010 reminder sounds to my external speakers when my headphones are plugged in? I'm using Windows 7.

I can do this in Microsoft Lync. In the Lync options, it allows me to choose which device gets the sound - speakers or headphones. It also allows me to choose a "Secondary ringer" so that both my headphones and my speakers can ring. I'd be happy to have either functionality.

Did I miss a setting in the Outlook options? Is there an Add-on maybe that will do this?

I have never seen an option like that. If you had not mentioned the Lync can do it I would say that it's more of a hardware issue than a software one, but I guess it could be added. – Justin C Mar 7 '11 at 20:15
Yes, my next stop may be to stackoverflow.com to see about coding an Add-on myself. If I actually do so successfully, I'll be sure to come back and post about it here. :-) – gilly3 Mar 7 '11 at 21:29

In case you have an USB headset:

As far as i know the only option is to plug the earphones in (I guess that you have an USB headset.). And restart the Outlook reminder after you set your default sound device to the usb headset. In this case it will use your headset. I used this successful with Win-XP and WoW I simply plugged the headset and made it default then i started WoW. With this i could hear any music over my boxes and WoW over the headset. I don't know if there is a program which allows to set the default soundcard for different apps.

If you do not want to pull the headset out. You could simply switch the default sound device start an app and switch the default sound device back. The app will use the default sound device selected during startup till the app is restarted.

Windows 7 automatically switches streams between default devices when they are added/removed. – Mark Sowul Mar 7 '11 at 21:06

Realtek sound cards provide such option via driver from their website....

Oh god, really? Can you specify further? Do I have to download a special driver? – sinni800 May 22 at 11:34
