For some reason I cannot open any https sites using Firefox 3.6.14 (proxy settings). So I am unable to login to Stack Exchange (using Firefox).

But I am able to open any https site using Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Chrome etc.

Why am I not able to open https in Firefox ? Is there any fix to this problem ?

In Firefox, click Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Connection Settings and verify that you have a proxy configured for SSL. It might be that it has only been configured for HTTP and not SSL which is required for https sites.

Check that these settings are consistent with your working Internet Explorer settings which can be found by opening Internet Explorer, pressing the Alt key to present the menu bar, click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.

Try uninstalling Firefox, rebooting, downloading and installing a new copy of Firefox.

@Steve: Maybe the OS should be reinstalled too? – TFM Jul 6 '11 at 16:29
@TFM: I would of thought browsers come with their own SSL stack so that they're not compromised if other browsers are. A drastic measure if other browsers are working though. – Steve Jul 7 '11 at 6:22

@Steve: I was ironic. What's drastic is reinstalling the browser BEFORE checking any possible misconfiguration. See Ruairi Fullam's answer. – TFM Jul 7 '11 at 17:55
