I have to made a setup for a PC that's going to be used to do heavy processing with ... Microsoft Excel ( -.-' )

Yep, I know how non-intelligent is make heavy processing with Excel, but I tried to convince them to use a real database engine and there's no chance to do that... so, returning to the hardware question...

We're between an i7-950 3.06GHZ 8MB with 4 cores 8 threads, and a AMD Phenom II 1090T X6 Black Edition.

Considering that memory and I/O doesn't make a bottleneck right now, it's mostly CPU processing, which one is the best to do this task?

I'm going to use a Windows 7 x64 and an Microsoft Office 2007 x64.

Haha, exactly. It was a surprise for me when I saw "4 processors working" in excel. I was convinced that it doesn't take advantage of multi cores. Anyway it sucks. – Gonzalo Larralde Mar 9 '11 at 14:04

If you were looking for advice on migrating to a database or something like that, you might find help here, though. Maybe if you created a proof of concept that showed it performs better without hindering your user(s)... – Bart Silverstrim Mar 9 '11 at 14:07

@Robert it's performance anyway. IMHO, when a process is CPU intensive doesn't matter if it's excel, oracle, or a snippet of code iterating from 1 to 10000. – Gonzalo Larralde Mar 9 '11 at 14:27
