This will primarily be for gaming. But I'm really not sure about this part. (BF3)

Would two GeForce GTX 560Ti 1GB PhysX cards in SLI outperform one of the GeForce GTX 580 1536MB PhysX CUDA cards?

Price wise, that would be the same.

This would go in a rig with the fastest X6 Amd cpu.

I'll get HD 6990 instead. Enough power in that one card. – data_jepp Mar 12 '11 at 14:36

Often the single expensive card would be better, simply because SLI scaling isn't that great. But in this case the GTX 560 Ti is very competitively priced and has really good SLI scaling so it is faster in most cases. PC Perspective has a review that compares 560 Ti SLI to the 580.

Do remember that there are downsides with SLI. There will be games for which SLI doesn't work, and you end up with only the performance of a single 560 Ti. Also, the minimum frame rate of SLI setups tend to be quite low even when the average is high, again due to imperfect load balancing.

The problem is that when the computer is old enough to upgrade to a SLI setup, the CPU is obsolete. – data_jepp Mar 12 '11 at 14:35

I would change your mind set around buying a performance video card. I would go for a powerful single card if that satisfies your monitor setup needs. SLI does not work with all games and can have some weird issues. I was in the same boat as you when I built a new machine and I wish I had just went with one single powerful card. Think of SLI when you want to upgrade your system down the road for an SLI setup.

I also like what Mr Alpha mentioned. You will get performance like a single 580 only when SLI is working perfectly. Otherwise, you are stuck with a single 560 performance level.

Take it from me. I built a 460 SLI setup instead of a single 480 which is the previous Nvidia lineup. I wish I would have just went with a single card. SLI is fun, when it works.

Looking back I agree. In 2005 I bought Gainward 6800GT GHL, in SLI. I had so much hassle with the drivers. I'll just get the HD 6990 and be done with it. Hehe. – data_jepp Mar 12 '11 at 14:34
