I need a good Microsoft word alternative for OS X. I require a strong grammar checker (at the same level as word) and good spell check for english, spanish, and russian. Preferably it would be cheaper than Word, but in an ideal world free and open source.

Any ideas?

Have you looked at LibreOffice / OpenOffice / NeoOffice, which are commonly recommended instead of MS Office for OS X? If so, what's missing? – Daniel Beck Mar 14 '11 at 22:09
I did not know about LibreOffice :) – Anne Mar 14 '11 at 22:18

You do know about Word for Mac, right? Is there any problem with it besides the cost? – nhinkle Mar 14 '11 at 22:18
It keeps crashing on me... It did it twice durring exams and that is unacceptable when writing a 5 page AP english Paper in an hour and a half. – redIago Mar 14 '11 at 22:47
iWork is good, I'd say it's better than NeoOffice when dealing with Word 97/03 files. If you must have Word compatibility I suggest looking at the online options, M$ office live, google docs and a few others are all really good. – tobylane Mar 14 '11 at 23:16

Options:
- OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/)
- NeoOffice (http://www.neooffice.org/)

NeoOffice is actually 'OpenOffice optimized for OSX'.
Tough, some users still prefer OpenOffice on Mac.
Just try both and see what you like the best.

I don't know how solid the grammar really is, but it works perfect for me.

does it have a grammar checker? – redIago Mar 14 '11 at 22:11
I was just editing my answer to add the grammar checker part :) – Anne Mar 14 '11 at 22:13

AbiWord - small footprint, good import/export with other formats if not too fancy formatting. Great if you don't have the resources for OpenOffice, but also nice to have something quick & fast. www.abisource.com
