What backup software for Windows?

What software should I use to make back-ups for of my computer files?

Features I need:

  • copies should be backup'ed on my Ubuntu server.
  • client soft should monitor folders which I've chosen to backup.
  • client soft should run on Windows XP, Windows 7, Linux.
  • there should be Web UI to view backup'ed file versions.
  • there should be availability to see diff with older versions.
  • backup should be done over Internet to remove machine - server.

Any suggestions?

Try DropBox.

Pros:

  • Works in Linux, Windows, Mac OS X etc.
  • Web interface available.
  • Limited versioning of files.

Cons:

  • Only one directory is synced, not the entire filesystem.

On Windows you can pull in the directories to be synced by using the mklink tool to create symbolic links or junction points I have tried this and it does work, there's even a question about it somewhere around here. I suspect something similar is achievable in Linux, so Dropbox is definitely a possibility for this kind of thing. – Mokubai Mar 16 '11 at 14:51
I'm using Dropbox, but it has limited space and files are not hosted on my server machine. I would like to sync straight to my Ubuntu server. – ViliusK Mar 16 '11 at 21:23

BackupPC running on a Linux server is my suggestion:

BackupPC Features [snipped]

  • A clever pooling scheme minimizes disk storage and disk I/O. Identical files across multiple backups of the same or different PCs are stored only once resulting in substantial savings in disk storage and disk I/O.
  • Optional compression support further reducing disk storage. Since only new files (not already pooled) need to be compressed, there is only a modest impact on CPU time.
  • A powerful web (http/cgi) user interface allows administrators to view log files, configuration, current status and allows users to initiate and cancel backups and browse and restore files from backups.
  • Flexible configuration parameters allow multiple backups to be performed in parallel, specification of which shares to backup, which directories to backup or not backup, various schedules for full and incremental backups, schedules for email reminders to users and so on. Configuration parameters can be set system-wide or also on a per-PC basis.
  • Tested on Linux, Freenix and Solaris hosts, and Linux, Win95, Win98, Win2000 and WinXP clients.

We used it to backup data from 30 sites (Windows and Linux servers) to a central location via VPN tunnels across the Internet.
