I'm a big fan of TweetDeck. Tweetdeck lets you keep track of multiple twitter accounts (yeah, I have several), as well as Facebook. Importantly, once you follow 200+ people, you can group your followees so that if you want info from one group of users, you can focus exclusively on that. Thus, you can see updates in a narrow set of interests (defined by your group), or open it up to the full torrent of tweets (and they really must roll in if you follow 1,000 plus!).
I especially like the feature of being able to simultaneously post to Facebook (which I view as more relaxed and friendly) as compared to twitter (which I view as a bit like a networking event).
Oh, and the ability to have a filter apply to the entire twitter-stream for your favorite buzz-words --- priceless - all real-time too.
One more thing, Tweetdeck offers a 'twitScoop' which shows not only the currently popular terms being used, but also identifies topics that are gaining momentum... just a great tool all around to get the earliest word on anything.
I almost forgot. It helps me track how many elephants I've bagged.
