I do have to say, I was a bit dissapointed with this question. I was hoping for a free program to make small, quick edits to images. Perhaps a bit like MS Pain (but with less fail). – joshhunt Aug 27 '09 at 10:14
Duplicate? superuser.com/questions/11111/… – msanders Aug 27 '09 at 10:52
@msanders, very closely related, at any rate – Jonik Aug 27 '09 at 11:48
Btw, shouldn't this be CW? (No definiteve answer, etc) – Jonik Aug 27 '09 at 11:49

GIMPshop may just be your best option

+1 for getting in before me :| – Lee Aug 20 '09 at 0:43
Thanks Lee ;) – joe Aug 20 '09 at 0:44
When not requiring all that GIMP can do, then Seashore is probably preferred for the user interface? – Arjan Aug 27 '09 at 10:45

Seashore is a bit sparse, but it might be worth a shot.

Depending on what you need to do, maybe you can even use Preview. It can do simple stuff like color corrections, rotate, resize, cropping.

Also iPhoto has more effects/filters. – John Fouhy Aug 20 '09 at 3:16
And annotating when adding the annotate buttons to the toolbar. (Even though the corresponding menu options will be disabled when you're not viewing PDF, the buttons will still work for images as well.) – Arjan Aug 27 '09 at 10:46
What does annotate do? – Thilo Aug 28 '09 at 9:27
Annotating often refers to adding comments to some text. Using that same tools in Preview, one can add text or some basic shapes to an image. – Arjan Aug 28 '09 at 16:23

In 10.6 Snow Leopard, annotations in Preview are by default enabled for images as well. See superuser.com/questions/13354/… for an example. – Arjan Sep 25 '09 at 10:12

I like the free MS PaintBrush clone. Its perfect for marking up screen shots and cropping bits out without having to load iPhoto or Lightroom.

Some Macs came with a bundled copy of Lemkesoft's Graphic Converter ("This Copy is registered to "Apple Bundle Customers"), though if your Mac didn't then it probably won't run on it (it does a check.)

But, it's shareware so you can give it a spin before buying it (and it's pretty cheap.)
