DD-WRT: How can I set up my router as an ad-hoc?

I notice the DDWRT had an adhoc option on wireless mode... does this mean internet can be shared to ad-hoc networks?

Or is there a way to do that anyway? without being in regular AP mode?

This question covers exactly the same ground as earlier questions on this topic; its answers may be merged with another identical question. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

Yes, it should be shared as if it is in AP mode.

If not, you can configure it for sharing anyway.

I question why you would want to do this.

Pros:

  • By eliminating Intra-BSS Relay, wireless-to-wireless bandwidth, between clients that are in range of each other, may be faster in some, but not all, cases.

Cons:

  • By eliminating Intra-BSS Relay, you lose "network diameter"; all devices must be within range of all other devices, or you'll have "hidden node" problems where some devices on the network might not be able to see other devices on the network because they're out of range. AP mode guarantees that all clients are within range of the network.
  • Most IBSS implementations don't support strong security.
  • Most IBSS implementations don't support power save mode.
  • If one or more devices move out of range of the DD-WRT box, the IBSS cell splits and now those devices don't have Internet connectivity, although the still appear to be on the network. Worse yet, they're propagating a "false copy" of the network, so other devices may join this split instance of the IBSS instead of the original one (the one with the DD-WRT box and thus Internet connectivity).
