I'm considering an AMD video card but have had trouble with ATI video cards in the past. My only hangup is my concern about drivers and overall stability, given ATI's past driver support and my past experience with them.

Because of this I'm very leery of returning to AMD as I prize stability, so if I could get an idea of people's recent experiences it would be very helpful. Has ATI/AMD improved or have you had issues (significant or otherwise) with AMD video card stability?

Please note that shopping recommendations are off-topic, as stated by the FAQ: Is it not about a shopping or buying recommendation. Also, it's impossible to objectively answer this question; questions of this type are too open ended and usually lead to confrontation and argument... – Tom Wijsman Apr 2 '11 at 22:56

I'm not asking what to buy. I want to know if people still have trouble with AMD video cards; their driver support was pretty poor in the past and I want to know if that's still the case. – Mark Sowul Apr 2 '11 at 22:58
You are considering to buy something and asking about a company in a subjective way, this is bad subjective and off-topic as this doesn't lead in useful discussion. For one gamer, ATI/AMD is pretty awesome as they improve all the time; for the other gamer, ATI/AMD gives him nothing but issues and it isn't improving. How could any answer to your question be useful? – Tom Wijsman Apr 2 '11 at 23:07

Sigh: "I, too, used to have problems, but I haven't in recent years." "I, too, used to have problems, and the same old problems still crop up." System stability is fairly objective: do things work, or don't they? Does your machine crash, or doesn't it? Someone should do a sociological study on the phenomenon of deletionism in wiki-style environments. – Mark Sowul Apr 3 '11 at 6:18
@MarkSowul: The amount of system stability, on the other hand, is fairly subjective. So it's not do things work, or don't they but it is to what extent do things work?. My machine could also do a soft or a hard hang, it could even just have some lower FPS, not hang at all or perhaps have some higher FPS. Also, the audience you target can split up in multiple types of experience; either their problems are resolved, better, still occuring, even worse or something along that lines. And that is also subjective, we thus can't reasonably answer your question because of useless answers... – Tom Wijsman Apr 3 '11 at 10:44

I've been running a triple monitor setup for a few years with two different pairs of ATI videocards(x1950 and hd4350, hd4350 and hd6970) and so far it has been working flawlessly right out of the box. I think it speaks very highly of stability and quality of their drivers (at least on windows).
