I'm itching to buy a Mac mini 2GB and have VM-ware fusion to run Windows 7. The Mac-mini I want has has 2GB of ram / 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this, should it be sufficient to run Windows 7 with good performance?

This really depends on what you're going to be using the VM for and what else you'll be doing on the Mac. Windows needs at least 1 GB, and really should have 2 GB to itself to run comfortably. I suspect that you will feel a big squeezed with just 2 GB total, but if you only need the VM to run a few low-resource programs then you may be OK. Macs are notoriously difficult to upgrade though, so you may be better off getting an extra couple GB of RAM now rather than later, when it'll be harder.

I probably wouldn't buy extra RAM through Apple. You can get the same, compatible RAM at a different retailer for cheaper. Newegg even has a "mac memory" section. Apple doesn't have proprietary RAM, they use the same stuff you buy there. – tjameson Apr 4 '11 at 1:58

That is a valid point, but from what I've seen, Mac Minis are not so easy to upgrade yourself. It's certainly doable, but might not be very easy. Buying memory from a 3rd party is usually cheaper though, I definitely agree with that. – nhinkle Apr 4 '11 at 5:11
Yeah, they're tough little boxes to get open. I think they only have one slot, but I could be wrong. – tjameson Apr 4 '11 at 5:19

I have a mini that I upgraded to 8Gb, bought through NewEgg for $94. It is easy to upgrade. The bottom panel of the mini rotates about 1 inch - you will see two dots that line up. Twist, remove, and the memory is right there, just like a laptop. There are two slots.

Install 2 x 4 GB of memory and all is working fine. installing memory is done in 30 seconds. open bottom - remove installed 2 modules, install 2 x 4 GB modules, close bottom and restart your mac.
