I am looking for a good open or closed source product (Web-based solution) with these features:

  • Ability to modify design/css
  • Includes file manager, discussion forum, and ability to add general pages
  • Publicly viewable, but only registered users may post

GroupSite.com is perfect EXCEPT it is too limited in styling it (just header image/colors). WikiSpaces.com is great except the file manager is at an admin level and just a basic dump of files (no categorized files).

Almost like a more organized Wiki, with file management.

Thanks for the help!

I recommend you take a look at this link

Its a comprehensive list of open source networking software, most of which have the features what you've asked for in your post. Take your pick!

Thanks Rogue! This lead me to Elgg which is absolutely perfect with their Groups, Files, and ability to create pages. – user7199 Aug 20 '09 at 19:38
Well i looked at Elgg too.. but decided to let you have a go at all of em just incase you liked any others.. glad this helped! – rzlines Aug 20 '09 at 19:55
Elgg looks great. Google doesn't have the intelligence to find it when searched for :( Anyways, I think for a pure forum perspective where you don't have any personal relationships but rather would get together on a topic of interest I think phpBB does a great job. – DemoGeek Aug 20 '09 at 20:48

I've recently discovered DotNetNuke and I have really enjoyed using it. Find out more here

There is SourceForge (for open-source programs only)

you could link up the word sourceforge (www.sourceforge.net) to the website, it makes it easier for the person who asks the question.. just a tip for ya. Cheers! – rzlines Aug 20 '09 at 19:09
