Last thing I did before I got this problem was to tell my laptop to hibernate. It wouldn't wake up properly, though, so I had to force a shutdown by holding the power button. Now when I try to boot, I get these errors:

mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init.

No init found. Try passing init= boot arg

So I booted Ubuntu off a thumbdrive, ran a fsck, and it told me this:

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
e2fsck 1.41.12 (17-May-2010)
fsck.ext4: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sda1
Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Did you successfully hibernate before? What is the output of fdisk -l /dev/sda? – Keith Apr 21 '11 at 0:18
This was the first time I've ever tried hibernating with this machine. And the output I'm getting is: "Cannot open /dev/sda1" – SKM Apr 21 '11 at 4:17
I am wondering if your hibernate/swap partition is actually set to your root partition, and it clobbered your root. That's why I wanted to see your partition table. – Keith Apr 21 '11 at 4:20
