I have the opportunity to upgrade my copy of Office 2007 to Office 2010 in a very low price through the MS Home Usage Program.

Looking for the differences on the Office website, I couldn't see anything worth the upgrade. The differences I found are mainly in rarely used tools and omission of some hardly used features. I couldn't tell of any change to the user experience (as opposed to the radical change done in 2007).

Do I miss something? Is the upgrade worth the time and money?

One of the bigger changes is with the UI. Office 2010 extends the ribbon interface to all applications (e.g. Outlook, OneNote, Visio). The ribbon in Office 2007 is only available in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

If you are a heavy user of Outlook then Office 2010 also adds the Outlook Social Connector to Outlook.

Microsoft's website contains fairly detailed comparisons of Office 2007 and 2010 for the following editions:

Thanks for the links. The title of the page is a little bit misleading (which is probably why I did not bother checking it when browsing the office site) - makes you think the comparison is among the different 2010 versions, and not among 2010 and previous versions. – ysap Apr 25 '11 at 23:45
Yeah, I agree - I just submitted some feedback to them about it. Hopefully they'll make it a bit more obvious. – 8088 Apr 26 '11 at 1:51

Office 2010 is like comparing Windows 7 & Vista, Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. That's the same with Office, Office 2010 is what 2007 should have been.

It's a lot more faster, the moment I start word it doesn't even have enough time to display it's splash screen. Loading documents is much faster and the Ribbon has been optimised, along with many bug fixes.

IMO it's worth the upgrade if you are a heavy Office user. Else you can stay with 2007 and spend your money elsewhere.
