This needs to be made a community wiki please. Edit the question and to the right below the edit box is a checkbox for making it a wiki. – EBGreen Aug 21 '09 at 21:38
not sure why, but ok. – Peteris Krumins Aug 21 '09 at 21:50

Poll type questions are generally expected to be community wiki because that way they do not generate reputation. The stack sites (StackOverflow, ServerFault, and SuperUser) are generally considered to be problem solving sites. Questions like this do not lend themselves to one clear objectively correct answer. So it is generally felt that there should be little to no reputation gain from them. – EBGreen Aug 21 '09 at 21:54
Got it! Will make questions like this one community wiki from the start next time! – Peteris Krumins Aug 21 '09 at 21:57
All good. It takes a while to get the feel for the sites. – EBGreen Aug 21 '09 at 22:00

VLC will do the trick and it's free! Lots more out there, but it seems to be the preferred one in all the polls I see.

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema is my choice. As @AnonJr says it's entirely subjective - whatever fits best.

MPC is also just 1 file, which makes it a real space-saver - most of the codecs it uses are already built-in. – Isxek Aug 22 '09 at 3:55

GOM Player

GOM Player does not play DVDs without a 3rd party DVD decoder. – Molly7244 Aug 21 '09 at 22:42

The best free DVD playback software is whatever you try, like, and gives you the least hassle. All other answers are subjective.

I gotta go with XBMC. Free, solid interface, and lets you skip all those "unskippable" FBI warnings at the beginning. That alone made it my player of choice.

I love Windows Media Player, frankly...it does the job, and well...the subtitles/caption support on there is also awesome...
