Just out of curiosity, In Avatar, you see Jake recording a video log quite often. It would be quite easy to pull off in After Effects (add date, time, etc.) to make a video log that looked similar, but is there actually a software that does that without the extra work? i.e. Record from a webcam, add date, time, frame, watermark, then export to video file.

See sample image from the movie here: http://i.stack.imgur.com/F8Fix.jpg

WebCamXP (for Windows) has the ability to add overlays and timestamps. It's free for single-camera use, so download it, have a play, and see what you can do.

The timestamp works, but the software doesn't have an option to put a custom image file eg. PNG over the video – Beatrice Apr 27 '11 at 1:25
Not sure about a transparent overlay...try VLC (videolan.org/vlc). If no luck with that we'll have to see if anybody else can suggest anything. – tombull89 Apr 27 '11 at 7:30

I believe that the free CamStudio fulfills your requirements. See also this review.

Another possibility is to add the watermark after recording the video.
You could use VirtualDu with one of its many filters. See one example in VirtualDub: How to watermark your videos.
Also, the Add Frame Numbers filter is said to be useful (old, but may still work).

Commercial alternatives that might possibly do the job :

BB FlashBack Express might be able to do the same, but in the commercial version.
Willing Webcam is another commercial maybe.
